PROJECTS

3-5 Curtis Street, Caringbah

Sydney Strata Engineers was engaged to resolve a critical safety, where the original brick balustrades were structurally unstable, non-compliant and posed a fall hazard to residents. SSE wrote the initial engineering report, developed the regulated design and scope of works, and administered the project as Superintendent under the DBP Act 2020. All unsafe balustrades were removed and replaced with fully compliant aluminium systems designed to meet current loading, spacing and height requirements along with concrete cancer repairs and new waterproofing and tiles to concrete balconies. The works eliminated a significant safety risk for the Owners Corporation and restored compliance with modern building standards.

What is a Design Practitioner?

A design practitioner is responsible for making design compliance declarations – they declare that designs comply with the Building Code of Australia and other relevant standards.A registered design practitioner needs to prepare regulated designs when there is building work on a class 2, 3 or 9c building, which involves a building element or a performance solution. This applies for new and existing class 2 buildings.  'Design practitioner - structural engineering' class is authorised to prepare regulated designs and make compliance declarations in relation to the understanding, prediction and calculation of the stability, strength and rigidity of built structures, and how structures and buildings resist and transfer natural and other forces. - Fair Trading NSW

Design and Building Practitioners Act Explained

The Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 was established to raise the standards of building design and building work.

The DBP Act generally applies to remediation works affecting a building’s structure, waterproofing, cladding or other key elements. Projects such as balcony or roof waterproofing, balustrade replacement, façade repairs and concrete remediation are typically included, while routine maintenance and minor works are usually excluded.
